Debra Taylor, Interim Superintendent

July, 2019

Dear Members of the Washington Central Community,

I am honored to serve the Washington Central school community as your Interim Superintendent.

Allow me to introduce myself:

My successful experience as a teacher, consulting teacher, district director of special education and student services,  director of curriculum and instruction, interim principal, regional education agency professional development director and superintendent have afforded me the opportunity to build knowledge in all aspects of educational operations and effect positive change. I have served as Superintendent in Vermont in two school systems over the past eleven years.

My leadership is characterized as compassionate, caring, student centered, dynamic and collaborative.  Schools under my leadership have incorporated personalization, technology, differentiation, innovation and creativity. As an instructional leader, I have a firm commitment to building relationships and promoting teacher growth and student learning.

As Superintendent in Vermont and administrator and teacher in two other states (Virginia and Wisconsin), I have succeeded in transforming curriculum and instruction practices in our schools while maintaining strong commitments to the culture and traditions of the schools and communities.

A strong communicator,  I am a skilled writer, facilitator, presenter and oral communicator. Examples of my success as communicator include conference presentations at the state and national level, strategic planning facilitator and manager, grant writer, policy developer and report writer.  I have a unique ability to engage effectively with students, staff, parents and board members and build positive interpersonal relationships.

As Superintendent, I have overseen all aspects of financial, business and human resource functions at school and central office level. My extensive knowledge and expertise includes budget development, oversight, reporting and contract negotiations. I am also well acquainted with human resource administration.  I have secured numerous grants. All local, state and federal audits in the districts I have worked have been positive, affirming of my strengths in these areas.

My educational experiences and background are quite diverse ranging from leadership in rural, suburban and urban school systems. Innovation, creativity, outside the box thinking and problem-solving are hallmarks of my leadership. I studied at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, achieving a doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Educational Leadership.

My experience driving organizational effectiveness and continuous improvement in small, medium and large organizations is evident in the successful development and implementation of long range plans for systems change and improved student achievement. I have a thorough knowledge of all facets of the educational system. I have completed extensive school improvement plans, both short and long-term, that are data driven and remarkably successful.

I have demonstrated the ability to build school cultures that value all staff, stakeholders and community in the education process.  I understand the importance of team-building and have created an atmosphere where team members are fully active and engaged with their work.

In every school or district I have led, we’ve had a family atmosphere. I support, encourage and take time to appreciate the many excellent talents and abilities of our students and staff. I encourage parent involvement as partners. I believe that all children can learn and provide opportunities for them to succeed each and every day.

I look forward to working with you during this time of district transition as we embark upon the journey to excellence together!

Yours in Education,

Debra J. Taylor
